MEPs want cars to clean up their act
Lib Dem MEP for the South East, Sharon Bowles, has today voted in favour of ambitious proposals to reduce CO2 emissions from cars across Europe.
Sharon Bowles said, "Today marks a big step towards meeting our greenhouse gas emissions targets under the Kyoto Protocol and beyond. Under these new proposals, in just a few years all new cars on Europe's roads will emit 25% less CO2 than they do now."
The draft legislation approved by the European Parliament will compel car manufacturers to produce cars that emit an average of 125g/km of CO2 by 2015 (down from 160g/km currently).
Sharon Bowles added, "The legislation I have supported today is one of the many ways in which Europe is responding positively to the challenge posed by global climate change. Naturally, I would have liked the proposals to have been stronger, but they are nevertheless a significant step in the right direction."
We now need to ensure that measures are taken in other areas to reduce our carbon emissions to the absolute minimum."
Sharon's remarks echo those of Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson, Chris Huhne MP, who recently called for all new cars in Europe to be zero carbon by 2040.
More widely, the Liberal Democrats have called for radical steps to transform Britain into an international leader in tackling climate change, making the country carbon neutral by 2050.
