Sharon has used the collapse of the ceiling of the European Parliament building in Strasbourg to highlight the folly of the Parliament's current institutional arrangements.
"At present my staff and I must move between Brussels and Strasbourg twelve times each year. If you take into account all the other MEPs, this has an annual cost of around £130 million. It is simply a huge waste of money which should be spent on something useful. To make matters worse, this is something that Member State governments could change, if they had the political will.
"Because of the collapse, this week we will be holding a full plenary session in Brussels for the first time. I hope this will show the wisdom of continuing to do so. But just in case, Liberal Democrat MEPs are already planning to wear hard hats to the next session in Strasbourg!"
