Sharon Bowles MEP and Catherine Bearder campaigning for better rail services in the South East
I have been campaigning with Catherine Bearder for better rail services in the South East. A well-functioning, inexpensive and reliable rail network is essential to improving the economy of our region and letting more people get out of the car and onto the train.
Transport accounts for nearly a quarter of all Europe's carbon emissions and we have to tackle it head-on if we are to make headway in the fight against climate change. This means that low-emission transport like trains and trams have to be made more affordable and more practical. Liberal Democrats are committed to investing in the rail network - and upgrading it to world-class standards, with high-speed trains rolled out across the country and full electrification of the network.
So many people would like to give up traffic jams, the queues on the M25 and the fuel costs of relying on the car for their travel needs. But so far the rail companies have let us down by not providing the service we need.
Constituents write to me all the time with exasperation over the state of our rail network. One in five trains in Britain are delayed. Trains are cramped and overcrowded at peak times. And in spite of declining services, fares keep rising. Commuters keep paying more for less.
Rail Surveys are now being handed out by Liberal Democrats at train stations across the South East. We want to know the experiences of commuters in and out of the region - what they like, don't like, and how they would like to see things improved.
Meanwhile I have been writing to the major rail operators in the region that I have had the most complaints about, to question the efficiency of their service, and how they intend to rectify the reported failures and provide a better service for the future.
If you'd like to participate in the rail survey yourself, you can do so online at this website. Just follow the link below:
