Ms Bowles was invited to take a tour of Lotus Renault GP headquarters by Operations Director, John Mardle, where she saw first-hand how a major F1 team works.

The tour included the testing centre, where car components are assessed for safety and performance, the track simulator, where the effects of the track on the car can be analyzed, and the wind tunnel, where the car's aerodynamic performance is fine-tuned.

Sharon Bowles MEP said:

"The tour of Lotus Renault GP was very informative. As a science graduate with a particular interest in engineering, I was fascinated to see the design process take shape.

"Everything needed to build an F1 car begins life on a computer screen and is then built using cutting-edge technology and equipment. The car is then tested and tweaked in the wind tunnel and on a simulated track.

"Team Lotus Renault GP is a great example of UK technology at its best. Not only do they design and assemble everything on site but, since 2005, the site at Enstone has been carbon neutral.

"It is also worth highlighting that motorsport is estimated to be worth more than £500m to Oxfordshire's economy and is responsible for approximately 4,000 engineering jobs."
