Euro MP Sharon Bowles, who represents Buckinghamshire at the European Parliament, visited Flagmakers in Chesham - a bespoke flag makers where hand-stitched flags

are made to order.
Recently, the company made a large Union flag for Barack Obama's state visit to the UK, which measured 30ft x 20ft and was hung in the hanger of the USS Richard Nixon.
Moving to their current location in 1921, Flagmakers currently employs 25 people and specialises in 'top end' flags. Sharon was shown around the site by Managing Director, Chris Deegan.
Sharon Bowles MEPsaid:
"Speaking to the artisans at Flagmakers, it was fascinating to discover that the Union Flag, commonly referred to as 'the Union Jack', requires 31 separate parts to be sewn together and is considered the most difficult flag to make.
"Interestingly, in addition to making flags for Oxfam and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Flagmakers also makes flags for the Order of the Garter, which hang in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, and flags for the Order of the Bath, which hang in Westminster Abbey.
"Many years ago I purchased a series of flags from Flagmakers for my Liberal International stand at Liberal Democrat Conference which won a prize and I am glad to see the same high standards are being applied to their flag making today.
"It is always nice to see businesses doing well in the South East, especially in this tough economic climate, and I wish Flagmakers well for the future."
