August 17, 2011 12:59 PM

Sharon Bowles MEP, who represents Kent at the European Parliament, is supporting the Government's plan, announced today, to set up a new 'enterprise zone' at the Pfizer research site in Sandwich.

US-based pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it would be leaving its purpose-built facility in Sandwich next year following the announcement of 6,000 redundancies worldwide.

The Government's plan will see the site atSandwichturned into an 'enterprise zone' which will benefit from 'looser planning controls, superfast broadband, capital allowances, and £150m of tax breaks.'

Sharon Bowles MEP said:

"I said back in February that I wanted to see the hole left by Pfizer in Kent's economy filled so I am very pleased the Government has announced plans for a new 'enterprise zone' today.

"As a former science graduate and patent attorney, I hope that businesses in the field of science, technology, and research and development, take the opportunity to set up shop in the new 'enterprise zone' and in doing so create new jobs in Kent.

"It is also important to remember that those made redundant by Pfizer constitute a readymade pool of talent with cutting edge research and development experience that I hope will be put to good use.

"South East England is fertile ground for new business, especially with the Olympics around the corner, and businesses such as Pfizer are always welcome."
