September 5, 2011 1:20 PM

British Euro MP, Sharon Bowles, who represents South East England at the European Parliament and chairs the Parliament's powerful Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, has been named on a list of the Top 10 'most influential' regulators by Financial News, a leading industry newspaper.

Sharon in StrasbourgBegun in 2005 the FN100 Most Influential list ranks, by category, the most influential people in European finance and is based on industry data and anecdotal evidence. Sharon appears 8th in the Top 10 most influential regulators category, a list which includes Bank of England Governor, Mervyn King, and newly appointed European Central Bank President, Mario Draghi.

An excerpt of Sharon's citation reads: 'With the UK suffering a "credibility crisis" in Brussels, according to many financial lobbyists, the Liberal Democrat politician's influence as a power-broker - already impressive following her work on the alternative investment fund managers directive, new capital requirements, market abuse rules and the wide-ranging review of the markets in financial instruments directive - can only increase.'

Sharon, who is the only British politician to appear on the list, said:

"The financial sector likes to list its most influential and since last year I have started to feature in the mix alongside Ministers and other leading figures. Being in the FN100 Most Influential is recognition by the industry of the leading role the European Parliament and my committee play in legislation.

"However, I agree that theUKhas lost credibility in Brussels. Indeed, the voices of Euroscepticism, always impractical in my view, are often heard above those who want to see the UK taking the lead in Europe, not just begrudgingly contributing from the sidelines.

"That said, the job of chairing the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, the European Parliament's busiest committee, is one I regard as a great responsibility. I look forward to the continuing challenge and I am flattered that some of my work has been so closely watched worldwide."
